Chapter 10

Let it never be said that I didn’t try to cajole my way out of my situation with the Masse. And by situation, I mean the royal fucking that’s about to ensue. Pun intended.

“This is a very nice tent,” I say. I smile up at him, but it’s too wide, and it feels awkward on my face. “What are the dimensions of it? It’s got to be at least twenty feet high and forty feet long.” I spread my arms as far as I can despite his hold on me. “It’s to encompass your wings, right? Until now I’ve never truly appreciated how roomy this place is. However, the firepit concerns me. Will it torch the place while we sleep? That would be an awful way to go.”

He stares down at me, remaining silent.

Instead of taking the hint that he wants me to shut up, I jump onto the next thing that floats to the top of my brain. I hate that I always run my mouth when I’m nervous, but since he doesn’t like to talk, it kind of evens things out.

“So, how about that dinner we had?” I say, raising my brows. “It was probably the best slab of meat I’ve ever tasted. Not that I want to know how it’s prepared, but I wouldn’t mind eating that again in the near future.”

His eyes narrow, but other than that there is not a twinge of movement from him.

My teeth click as I slam my mouth closed.

“Very good.” He drops his hands from me. “Lift your arms.”

I do as I’m told, eyeing his claws as he brings them to rest on my sides. With a steady hand, he drags the sharp points through the material of my dress, slowing cutting it away from my body. When he’s done, it falls to the floor in a discarded heap. Apparently, my husband likes to slash my clothes off instead of asking me to remove them. If he continues in this fashion, I won’t have anything to wear.

From the look in his eyes, I’ll venture to guess he wouldn’t mind.

The urge to cover myself is inherent, but I push it aside. If he wants to look, I won’t be able to stop him. His gaze, glowing more brightly than the sun, roves over me. And just like the giant star, it warms me. Everywhere his eyes linger, my skin prickles with awareness, making that warmth spread all over.

“Exquisite,” he says softly. His breath caresses my cheek, making my heart stutter. He takes my uninjured hand in his and presses a kiss to my knuckles. Unbidden shivers race along my spine, and I’m not able to conceal them. They zip through me, making my hand tremble underneath his lips.

“Do you
